I've been intrigued by anatomy and the freedom movement brings since I was a child. No surprise then, that I was drawn to the fitness industry where I've worked for 15 years as a fitness instructor, P.E. and Health Secondary School teacher and Tutor/Assessor for the National Certificate in Fitness and Personal Training.

I first encountered Pilates through a mat class at Contours gym in 2000. I loved the gym classes but then, a few years later, I discovered a Romana’s Pilates Instructor and became a regular client at her studio.

When it comes to Pilates, Romana's Pilates is “ the real deal”. The training programme was created and taught by Romana Krysanowska, the protégé of Joseph Pilates himself.

Practicing the authentic method as a client was profound. So inspiring that I retrained as a Romana's Pilates instructor in 2011 and made it my full-time job. Nothing beats the feeling of getting that connection for yourself or seeing others become one with their bodies. Once you 'get' the method, you never want to give it up.

Please bring your own mat and a towel to the community classes. I can advise you on any other equipment you may need for the classes.

Our Pilates Philosophy

ROMANA’S PILATES

Pilates has proven itself for more than 80 years as an effective and safe method of exercise, when taught and applied correctly. Romana Kryzanowska was Joseph Pilates chosen protégé. It was she who carried on his work and popularized it globally. I chose to train as a Romana’s Pilates Teacher because I experienced 1st hand how the true essence of Joseph Pilates genius system of work has been honoured and preserved.

Through Romana's Pilates you first acquire complete control of your own body and then, through proper repetition of its exercises, you gradually and progressively acquire that natural rhythm and coordination associated with all your mental and subconscious activities.

You apply Pilates in everyday life, like how you sit, how you walk. You’ve heard alot of people complain about back problems; its because these people walk incorrectly with the last vertebrae of their tail bone. They stick it out instead of pulling it in and down” Romana Kryzanowska

BE KIND TO YOUR BODY

  • Treat your body with respect and kindness. Always work to your own level where you are in control. You do not need to force you body to do something that strains or hurts it.

  • If an exercise hurts, or you are straining to perform it, stop. Either rest, or try a modified version.

  • Pilates is about quality not quantity. Doing one or two repetitions of an exercise well, with the powerhouse engaged is far better than doing 10 sloppy or strained repetitions.

  • Send positive thoughts to you body. Be thankful for all it does for you and guide it to enjoy movement and exercise.

  • Movement should be approached like life, with enthusiasm, joy and gratitude - for movement is life and life is movement, and we get out of it what we put into it.” Ron Fletcher
